Our Founders: Hal and Chris

For years, Hal and Chris Nungester poured their hearts into serving kids in Haiti through H.I.S. Home for Children. Alongside an incredible team of over 50 Haitian staff, they ran four homes that became safe, loving spaces for over 400 children—from newborns to teens. Some came to H.I.S. Home as orphans; others were brought by parents who loved them deeply but couldn’t provide for them because of poverty.

Under the Nungesters’ leadership, H.I.S. Home became more than a place to stay—it became family. Children who arrived malnourished grew healthy and strong with good food, medical care, and love. The team also started a nanny training program that’s open to the community, helping locals gain valuable childcare skills and find meaningful work across Haiti.

Hal and Chris, married since 1974, raised six kids of their own—and opened their hearts to four more from Haiti. With Hal’s background in ministry and leadership and Chris’s in social work and child welfare, they built H.I.S. Home on faith, family, and compassion.

Today, Matias and Barbarah are carrying that legacy forward as the new Executive Directors. Barbarah, came to the orphanage in 2003 with her two younger brothers and was later adopted by Susan Narkewicz and Frank Reynolds in New York. It’s a full circle moment for Barbarah and her family, and they’re passionate about continuing what Hal and Chris started—creating a home filled with safety, dignity, and hope, and helping every child dream bigger.
